Many of those people who need our help the most, are currently unable to attend our Day Services Centre due to transport problems. Quite often their symptoms and medication make gaining access to public transport very difficult. This leaves patients feeling isolated at home, sometimes with few or no supports or visits.
The Day Services Centre is a safe and supportive space for people to gain access to clinical care, complementary therapies and, most importantly, develop trusting and positive relationships to help counteract the loneliness often experienced by those with a terminal illness.
Our current ambulance is used on a daily basis and does around 184 escorts per month. In terms of effective functioning and servicing, it is becoming something of a liability and urgently needs replacing.
Additional benefits for you:
Community Car at a cost of £15,000
Many people suffering from a terminal illness understandably prefer to be cared for in the familiar and comfortable surroundings of their home. This is made possible by our team of five community nurses who visit three or four patients every day - nearly 1,000 visits per year.
Currently, they share the use of only one car, which is ten years old and showing signs of its age. We would love to replace this with a new hybrid car to ensure we can continue to provide a reliable, mobile and rapid response to our patients when they need us.
Additional benefits for you:
Website Redesign at a cost of £12,000 (or Gift in Kind)
Our current website no longer serves our purposes: it fails to communicate who we are, explain our services or help us raise funds. It is in real need of a redesign!
Many patients are scared at the prospect of entering Hospice care. We would like to alleviate these fears with effective information and an introductory DVD which can be downloaded. We would like our web site to provide invaluable information to our patients on the Hospice and the services we provide, with advice on all aspects of palliative care.
Our web site could also play an important role in our fundraising, supplying our latest newsletters, a donation facility and a forthcoming events information. Online communication would also assist us in cutting down on our print communication, saving us much-needed funds.
Additional benefits for you:
-
Your company credited as sponsor on our web site, including logo
-
An active link on our homepage to your company website
-
A special page of thanks to you with information on your company
Patient information booklet at a cost of £6,000
When a patient is referred to St. John's Hospice to receive care from any one of our services, they will undoubtedly feel apprehensive and emotional, as will their family. We want to help put their mind at ease and make them feel welcome. One way of achieving this is by providing them with information about the hospice so that they have an idea of what to expect.
We currently have a very outdated information booklet which is dull and does not really convey the true essence of St. John's. We really want to invest in a bright, user-friendly booklet that will last for several years and which briefly explains the hospice services, supported by photographs.
Additional benefits for you:
Pyjamas and nightgowns
For six months supply - £1,500
For twelve months supply - £3,000
We are always keen to ensure that our patients feel they are in a home from home environment and kept comfortable throughout their stay. Currently, when a patient begins their stay on the in-patient unit, they are given the option of wearing a hospital gown or a family member brings in nightclothes from home. By providing them with pyjamas and nightgowns, it takes the added strain away from relatives and allows patients to relax.
Sponsor an outing for our Day Centre clients at a cost of £600 per outing (to include transport costs and admission fees)
Many of our Day Centre clients do not often get an opportunity to go out and see the sights of London. Their illness may prevent them from travelling on public transport and they may be struggling with a regular source of income. We would like to offer them special occasion days, whereby they have the chance to visit somewhere they have always wanted to go to, such as tickets to the theatre or entrance to an attraction of their choice. By providing a means for enjoyment, clients are able to take their minds off their illnesses for a while and grow in confidence.
Gym fitness accessories at a cost of £2,000
One of the primary objectives of the Day Services Centre is to help our clients maintain personal wellbeing. Regular exercise is proven to build self-esteem, enhance mood, reduce stress and anxiety and improve mobility.
We would like to purchase a variety of fitness accessories, such as yoga mats, small weights, medicine balls and skipping ropes, in order to help our clients meet their own specific health objectives. These might be to build strength, meet a weight target, or relieve pain.
Additional benefits:
DVD Library - to provide 50 DVDS £500, to provide 100 DVDS £1,000
A DVD library will complement our new entertainment systems. We feel that being able to provide our patients with a choice of films for them to watch, when they are predominantly bed bound, is an essential way of adding some comfort to their day.
The DVDs will also be used by the Day Services Centre.
Angled bed lamps at a cost of £250 each
To provide 19 lamps - £4,750
Feedback from patients and staff on the in-patient unit has indicated that angled bed lamps are a particular requirement. Currently, there are only ceiling lights and one wall mounted light in each room. Angled lamps will provide more light on a specific area, allowing patients to see more clearly when it comes to activities such as eating and reading.
