kulsoom 1Kulsoom’s first experience of a hospice was when she was just 13 years old. Her father, diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer was admitted to a hospice where he spent his last few weeks.

Kulsoom Mirza, now 25, has decided to honour her Father’s memory, and raise awareness of the vital work of hospices by taking on the amazing challenge of trekking the Grand Canyon for St John’s Hospice!

"My Dad is my main inspiration for doing this trek. He’s always my inspiration for doing anything good and charitable because that was the kind of person he was. However, hospices in general are also my inspiration.

It was hospice staff that looked after him, and my family, during one of the hardest times in our lives, and it breaks my heart knowing that there are so many other families that go through the same thing all too often. But it’s a relief to know that there are hospices like St John's there to provide physical and emotional support. Taking part in this trek, and fundraising for St John’s Hospice, is my way of saying thank you and giving something back.

When I told my friends and family that I was going to be doing this trek, the general consensus was “you’re not serious?” But after confirming that it’s 100% true, I received a lot of messages saying that it’s for a great cause; especially from family and family friends who knew my dad and witnessed first-hand the support given to us by the hospice. It’s great to know that everyone understands my insane decision to trek the Grand Canyon!”
