Join over 150 other volunteers and use your skills to help make a difference at the Hospice. Make a difference in many areas including our shops, fundraising, patient and family care and in our gardens.
Whatever your circumstances if you have the time and talents, we need your help. You could be helping out in the in-patient unit, in day services, with the fundraising team or even the hospice shop. For a full list of our opportunities, go to the current opportunities page.
In return we offer you:
- Training and support
- A sense of fulfillment
- An opportunity to learn new skills
- A chance to meet new friends
- A real appreciation of your involvement
Who can volunteer?
Most roles are open to anyone aged 16 or over who can give a minimum commitment of six months. We reimburse out of pocket expenses including travel costs.
References and CRB checks
We follow up references on all our volunteers. References should ideally be from people who know you in a professional capacity e.g. from somewhere you have worked, volunteered or studied. Referees should have known you for at least one year, and must not be related to you.
If you would like to work directly with patients and families, we will also ask you to complete a confidential health questionnaire and a Criminal Records Bureau disclosures form.
Depending on individual circumstances, a health problem or a criminal record does not necessarily exclude you from volunteering.
When working with patients we ask you to give a minimum of one session per week (normally three hours) on a regular basis. Within the shop and the fundraising department, the times and hours worked are more flexible.
We take our commitment to volunteers very seriously and were delighted to be awarded the prestigious Investing In Volunteers standard in October 2009 for our Befriending Service.
