Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers can get involved in a variety of ways including:
In-Patient Unit and Day Services: Volunteers befriend patients and their families and friends and are readily available as companion and confidant. They assist by taking meals and refreshments to patients, making teas and coffees, helping patients to complete their lunch and supper menus, arranging flowers, going on the occasional shopping errand and generally being accessible and visible members of the hospice team. We have volunteers working on the In-Patient Reception Desk. Volunteers escort patients using the Hospice Ambulance.
Drivers: Volunteers provide transport for those who attend our Day Services. Clients are picked up from their home in the morning and taken back in the early afternoon. The volunteers would use their own car. Any costs incurred, e.g. parking or congestion charge, would be covered.
Therapies: Qualified therapists provide patients with complementary therapy treatments and we welcome qualified hairdressers to volunteer in our Day Services.
Befriending: The Befriending Service offers people diagnosed with life-threatening and terminal illnesses the opportunity to be matched with a Befriender who undertakes to visit the client regularly to offer companionship and support and to share the day-to-day practicalities and pleasures we tend to take for granted. The service is restricted to volunteers who are over the age of 21.
Fundraising: Helping to organise fundraising events, database work, mailouts, monetary collections and counting and helping the fundraising team in general. These roles can be on more of an ad hoc nature if you do not have the time to make a regular commitment.
Administration: Working with our administrative team can include time spent typing letters, filing, computer work and just generally helping in our busy office.
Hospice Shop: The shop is situated in St. John’s Wood High Street and is open seven days a week. Volunteers assist our Manager in the running of the shop by serving customers, sorting items that have been donated and being friendly and helpful to our customers.
